#TeamNura (Nura, Ayub & Razia)

Nura is 21 years old and classified as profoundly disabled with cerebral palsy, complex epilepsy, cortical visual impairment, global developmental delay, spastic quadriplegia and swallowing issues (she has a low-profile Mic-Key feeding tube). She has a loud voice and lots of attitude with an even bigger smile and laugh.

We met Warrior On Wheels in 2017 at the Cape Town Cycle Tour expo. Ayub had been cycling for a few years and wanted to include Nura in this activity. Unfortunately, she was already too big for the baby buggies. And so it happened that Ayub saw WOW at the expo and I saw them on an ENCA news clip as they were preparing for the cycle tour.

We joined immediately. We had met the family we needed and everything they represented resonated with us. We did our first Cape Town Cycle Tour in 2018 as a family. Nura was 13 years old when she completed the 109 km traditional CTCT route. Since then Nura has done the Knysna Cycle Tour (50km), Ride Joburg (97km), Amashova Durban Classic (106km) and the Gqeberha Herald Cycle Tour (106km). This year, 2025, Team Nura ran the Two Oceans Half marathon for her 21st birthday.

Warrior On Wheels has shown us the power of friendship and the strength of like-minded people. Being part of an extended community, sharing the highs and lows and everything in between with people who get it has been a relief. Nura has made friends and found a happy place in the activities we all do together. We may be doing the running or cycling and pulling and pushing, but Nura is also working hard in the buggy. She is often very quiet or even sleeping, but it doesn’t mean she isn’t enjoying or getting the full experience. Once in the car she chats away and is alert and aware of everything around her.

Warrior On Wheels has given us a purpose beyond just ourselves and our family. With WOW we strive to show other families what is possible. We may be scared, but we try anyway. Nura has taught us to push our boundaries and to be brave. We say we move with purpose – move for yourself, for your children and for all those who are not able to move as freely as you are.

We have gone river rafting with WOW, we’ve been to a theatre performance, we rode the red sightseeing bus – just a few of the things we may not have tried had it not been for WOW.

Warrior On Wheels provides you the opportunity to try with support and caring. Besides our families we’ve met the most amazing, unselfish individuals who give their time, energy, strength and love to our children. Our superhuman cyclists and runners give everything of themselves to ensure the sporting experiences are safe, comfortable and enjoyable for our children and families.

We have found our place, our voice and ourselves within the Warrior On Wheels family. Nura has granted us this opportunity.
